Eng. Suad Al-Bahar is the Manager of the Construction and Building Materials Program, she is a Research Scientist at the Energy and Building Research Center of Kuwait Institute for Scientific. She is with over 30 years’ experience in construction and building materials research and development. Her technical experience is aligned with and focused on characterization and investigation of composite and innovative materials and exploitation of their applications in construction. She has worked on numerous research projects addressing corrosion protection systems and promote health and durability of reinforced concrete structures and pavements, with great attention to waste recycling technologies and sustainability in construction. She is a member of Kuwait National Committee of Building Codes, a co-founder and member of the ACI Kuwait chapter.
Dr. Bentivegna specializes in the characterization and implementation of cementitious materials and the mitigation of premature deterioration due to concrete durability problems. Additionally, he is an expert in the investigation and mitigation of structures affected by alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and in the development and implementation of rapid repair cementitious systems, including calcium aluminate cement (CAC).
Dr. Bentivegna also has extensive knowledge in the development of concrete testing. He developed his own testing apparatuses for monitoring cement hydration, including isothermal calorimeters and chemical shrinkage setups, as well as techniques for monitoring early-age volume change. These testing setups aim to more accurately correlate laboratory testing to actual field performance.
As a graduate research assistant at the University of Texas, Dr. Bentivegna participated in concrete-related projects with emphasis in fly ash, calcium aluminate cements and lithium implementation for ASR-affected concrete. He performed this work for the Federal Highway Administration, local department of transportation offices, international companies and local businesses. Dr. Bentivegna also has experience in structural and transportation engineering, having worked as an intern at design consulting firms.
Dr. Ibrahim Asi is working as Manager of Regional Excellence Center for Pavement Studies and Evaluation at Arab Center for Engineering Studies (ACES), Amman, Jordan. Obtained his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering in 1983, M.Sc. in 1986 and Ph.D. in Transportation, Pavement Material option in 1996, from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Worked for nine years as an Assistance and Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at Hashemite University in Zarqa, Jordan, five years as an as Assistant Professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Taught over twenty short courses, completed eighteen funded research projects, authored over 110 journal and conference papers that appeared in leading international periodicals and conference proceedings. His fields of expertise are highway and airport materials, modification, design, Construction specification, evaluation, maintenance, management and Quality control methods.

Mufid A. Samarai, a Senior Advisor at Sharjah Research Academy and Professor of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering at the University of Sharjah. United Arab Emirates. He obtained his MSC. from Kansas State University USA and Ph.D. from University College London in 1976, and has been engaged in teaching, research and consulting work.
He was Dean of College of Engineering at Applied Science University in Jordan. Professor at College of Engineering Baghdad University since 1963 , Director of National Center for Construction and Research Center NCCL and Deputy Minister of Housing in Iraq.
He was involved in the repair of over 100 structures and bridges in Iraq, Jordan and UAE.
A former vice-president of CIB (Holland) and Bureau member of RILEM (France). Board Member of OMAINTEC and Member in the Advisory Committees of many Establishments such as MEDMA, SASO, Dubai Municipality and Athar Conservation Centre.
His research interests include quality control, low cost housing, non-destructive testing, durability, energy conservation, damage assessment and repair of structures.
He has over 185 publications an author of a book and co-author of a second book. He has 4 registered patents in Iraq, Portugal and France.
Andy has over 25 years of experience in the field of Building and Construction, ranging from structural testing within the nuclear industry to fire testing. Having established the Dubai Cladding Technology Centre and Laboratory, and operated it for 10 years, he has particular knowledge of heavy structures testing and weathertightness testing of cladding, curtain walling and building envelope systems.
He has carried out many consultancy projects as a third-party specialist in the field of building envelope technology.
Andy has a long-standing association with the CIOB. He is currently the Chairman of the Dubai and Northern Emirates Center and he is also an experienced candidate mentor.
He continues to provide input into the UAE code and is a regular speaker at industry technical seminars such as this one.
Dr. Emad Abu-Aisheh joined Saudi Aramco in Feb 2009 as structural and civil materials specialist within Consulting Services Department. He is currently the onshore structural standards committee vice chairman and member of the civil engineering standards committee. Emad is also a board member of Saudi Aramco IBTIKAR. Prior to joining Saudi Aramco he was leading the concrete technology and structural dynamics unit of WorleyParsons, Perth office, Australia. He served as lecturer and research scientist at the University of Melbourne, Curtin University Australia and Virginia Tech in the USA and Higher Colleges of Technology, UAE. He has over 25 years experience in structural engineering and concrete technology split between academia, research and industry.
Emad specialty fields include: sustainability, durability, concrete technology, structural engineering, repair and waterproofing of concrete structures, Liquid retaining structures, Modal testing of Civil Structures, structural health monitoring, NDT of civil engineering structures, and Finite Element Modelling using STRAND and ANSYS.
Emad received his B.S. (1986) and M.S. (1987) in Civil Engineering from the University of Mississippi, USA and his PhD. in Civil Engineering from the University of Melbourne, Australia in 2003.
Emad has over 40 world class publications and over 50 technical engineering reports in the areas of structural health monitoring, Durability, concrete technology and NDT. He is a Board member of Saudi Eastern Chapter of the American Concrete Institute and also a member of several international organizations including the American Concrete Institute; Engineers Australia, AISC, Concrete Institute Australia, Jordan Engineering Association and more.
Dr. Salah Zoorob is a Scientific Advisor working in the Construction & Building Materials Program, at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. He has been involved in various aspects of highway materials research and product development for almost 20 years at a number of research institutes in the UK, South Africa and Malaysia. He has over 80 publications in the general areas of bitumen rheology & chemistry, bitumen modification and performance of asphalt mixtures.
Amer Bin Ahmed is the Managing Director of Knauf Middle East and is responsible for establishing a sustainable business operation in the Middle East, East Africa, and the India region.
Mr Bin Ahmed brings with him over 17 years of experience in the gypsum industry and played a key role in developing Boral and Lafarge in the Middle East region. He also crafted growth strategies as well as long term sustainability and positioning for the major brands of both companies.
At Lafarge and Boral, Mr Bin Ahmed was instrumental in developing a differentiated business strategy that propelled them to become the fastest growing gypsum board product and system solution providers in the Middle East and Asia region.
Mr Bin Ahmed has received recognition from the ASTM society for being the first to implement the ASTM standards in the region.
Mr Bin Ahmed did his Gypsum Masters in Switzerland and holds an MBA degree from the United States.
Current appointment as Knauf Technical Manager based in UAE and supporting additional regions Oman, Qatar, India and Saudi Arabia. Completed Civil Engineering degree at Cardiff University with a focusing on structural materials and design. After working in the construction industry for almost 10 years I have gained significant experience both in Middle East and Europe specializing specifically on the design and development of structural steel systems such as interior separating walls and exterior façade systems.
Now leading a team of architects and engineers who are providing Knauf design solutions to allow complex interior design schemes and features to be realized using drywall construction methods. Projects include high-rise, premium build across the UAE, Qatar, Oman, India and KSA regions, satisfying various uses including residential, commercial and mixed use builds
Eng. Sharifa Al-Fadala is a Senior Research Associate, she joined KISR in 1997. She obtained her M. Sc and B. S.c in civil engineering from Kuwait University. She has more than 19 years of experience in the field of Building Materials and concrete Technology. She has published several conference papers in the area of concrete building materials and co-authored papers in International and National journals. She is a member of ISO technical committee “Concrete, Reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete “ISO/TC71”, member of Kuwait Engineering Society (KES), and rapporteur and team member of National Building Code committee-Concrete Structures technical team.
Mark Schneider is Head Global Product Sustainability at Sika, located in Zurich/Switzerland (www.sika.com).
Mark has worked in the roofing industry for many years in different environmental and sustainability functions before he joined Sika as global product sustainability head.
Apart from his main task to lead the company’s product sustainability program, Mark is heavily involved in the Sika Group sustainability strategy, target setting scheme, reporting and communication activities. Mark is also participating in numerous environmental committees and standard-writing bodies in Switzerland and Europe.
Mark has a master in environmental sciences (MSc) from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), Zurich, Switzerland and a master of business administration (MBA) from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSW), Lucerne, Switzerland.
Dr. Mohamad Nagi has more than 25 years experience in construction materials, corrosion of metals, durability, repair and non-destructive test methods. Currently services as the Director of Infrastructure Sustainability and Assessment Centre at the American University of Dubai. Until October of 2009, he was the regional manager of the materials technology and asset integrity group of GHD in Dubai. Prior to joining GHD, he worked for 17 years at CTLGroup, a leading engineering firm specialised in concrete structures in the United States. Dr. Nagi worked on many projects dealing with all aspects of durability of reinforced concrete structures in the Gulf region and in the U.S.A. While at GHD, Dr. Nagi Served as project director of an IVTA (Independent Verification and Testing Agency) program for Burj Khalifa and the Qatalum Aluminium Plant in Qatar and he was appointed as third party reviewer for several key projects in the region to asses the durability and define the actual service life of structures. He has been the author of more than 40 technical papers on concrete materials, corrosion, durability and non-destructive testing.
Mr. Arif Husain Al Marzooqi was appointed as Head of Products Conformity Assessment Section in Dubai Central Lab Department (DCLD) of Dubai Municipality effective December 6th, 2015.
Graduated from UAE University with Bachelor Degree of Science Major Geology in the year 2000. He joined the Municipality in 2000 as a Field Studies Researcher Assistant, and was later promoted to the post of Acting Head of Research and Standardization Management Office. He was later appointed as Head of Research and Standardization Management Office in which he was looked after the Standards development for testing and products specification for conformity assessment.
He was promoted in 2012 to the post of Acting Head of Inspection and Certification Section. Mr. Arif chaired a number of committees in Dubai Municipality such as the Technical Approval Committee, Development of Dubai Soil Profile Mapping Committee, Concrete Sustainability Team and participated as active member in a lot of other committees such as Strategic Transformation Management Team of DCLD, Establishing International Center for Halal Products Accreditation and Certification Team, Certification Advisory Committee, Certification Technical Committee, DCL Internal Auditor Team and DCL Awards and Innovations Team. He was also instrumental in winning some more than 10 local, regional and international awards for DCL and Dubai Municipality, and have a big role in making DCL/Dubai Municipality Conformity Mark available and existing in more than 22 countries around the world and development of more than 70 standards for testing and products specification.
Antonio coordinates the Research & Development Department of the Italian based company SGM EXPERIMENATIONS (www.experimentations.it), specialized in the field of laboratory and site testing of construction materials and soils, NDT testing services, structural assessment, quality control management, third-party engineering consultancy, long-term monitoring and control of structures and infrastructures.
Antonio is a structural engineer with a solid technical background acquired internationally along the course of his professional and educational path in the field of assessment and seismic retrofitting of existing structures, infrastructures and historical masonry buildings.
He has a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Naples Federico II (Italy) and a Master of Science in Structural Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (USA). He has conducted many projects internationally (Europe, Middle East and North Africa), he is ACI and IABSE member, he currently publishes research papers and speaks at many international technical seminars and conferences.
